Profile
Rachael Howlett’s drive to help Australians with their finances began with her own family. “I am driven by my childhood where my parents were not provided with financial literacy and unfortunately struggled,” she says.
It was not a future she wanted for herself or her own family, and it has shaped a career spent helping Australian families change their financial story. As a finance strategist team leader at Infinity Group Australia, she measures that work in the outcomes families once thought were beyond them.
Howlett’s path was not one she had mapped out from the start. She spent many years in events management before a personal banker role at Infinity Group 10 years ago moved her into finance. She built her career by stepping outside her comfort zone and saying yes to opportunities that aligned with her values, staying focused on continuous learning and strong client outcomes, which in time led her into leadership and national stages.
By her account, Howlett has built expertise in helping Australian families achieve rapid debt reduction, enabling them to pay down a 30-year home loan in far less time, sometimes in under 10 years, and in showing clients how the leverage in their home can be used to build wealth. Working alongside accountants and financial planners, she helps clients move beyond simply owning a home towards a structured plan that takes in investment property strategies, cash flow and using lending to accelerate wealth creation.

As a founding member of WOW! (Women. Opportunity. Winning.), an employee resource group created for all women of Ryan Specialty, Phillips Topping has long championed for women in the industry.
“It’s very important to set an example and to not only inspire but mentor other females,” she adds.
In addition to her sharp marketing eye, the key to Phillips Topping’s success lies in her high-energy approach and positive attitude.
“As the leader of a team, it’s important to motivate and encourage your team members. People work very hard and do their best and it’s important to recognize these efforts. For my career overall, my attitude has been one of curiosity. The more you can learn, the better you’ll understand the business, and then the deeper your knowledge will become, making you a better team member.”

“My approach is to listen first and advise second,” says the Gold Coast-based finance strategist. Before any strategy is discussed, she wants the full picture: a client’s short-term objectives, long-term aspirations, family circumstances and what financial success looks like to them. Only then does she map out a pathway, making sure clients understand the reasoning behind every recommendation so they can decide with confidence.
What she regards as her strongest quality is the ability to distil complex financial concepts into simple, practical advice people can act on. “I believe that financial education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or level of experience,” she says. Howlett believes that people are far more likely to take action when they genuinely understand the strategy and the reasons behind it.
Much of that philosophy plays out beyond one-on-one advice. Howlett has built an educational platform across social media, podcasts and live presentations, including market and economic discussions with economist Dr Andrew Wilson, that reaches Australians long before they become clients. As a team leader, she balances developing and empowering her team with staying hands-on for clients, being a combination of practitioner, educator and leader that she sees as central to how she adds value.
For all the awards and recognition, Howlett is clear about what matters most. “I have always believed that our industry has the ability to create meaningful change in people’s lives,” she says. Her goal, in the end, is a simple one: to leave people in a better position than when she first met them.
