GOAT Financial Services settled around 140 loans worth more than $120 million in FY26, growth that founder and director Peter Nguyen puts down almost entirely to referrals from existing clients and professional partners. He founded GOAT in 2024 after more than 10 years in lending across major banks, including CBA, Westpac and St.George, a background that gave him a strong technical foundation and a clear understanding of how banks assess applications.
The firm’s name stands for “Greatest of All Time,” a standard that Nguyen wants the business to live up to through strong advice, genuine relationships and a level of service clients remember. “Clients shouldn’t have to chase their broker for an update, particularly when they’re making one of the biggest financial decisions of their life,” he says.
Nguyen’s banking background now underpins a brokerage built around complex scenarios rather than straightforward rate comparisons. Much of GOAT’s work involves self-employed clients, investors, first home buyers and SMSF lending, where the deal’s structure can determine whether it gets approved at all.
“Many clients come to a broker thinking they just need the lowest rate, but often what they actually need is the right structure and the right lender for their longer-term goals,” Nguyen explains. He spends much of his time walking clients through servicing calculations, stress testing and future borrowing capacity, so they understand how a lender will assess their application. “When clients have that understanding, the process is smoother and there are fewer surprises,” he adds.
This focus on structure over quick wins has become the engine behind GOAT’s growth. As the brokerage’s reputation for handling harder scenarios has spread, so has the calibre of the enquiries reaching it. “I think that creates a good type of growth because there is already an element of trust before the client even speaks to us,” Nguyen says.
A large share of the business now comes from repeat clients and referrals, along with relationships with accountants, solicitors and buyers’ agents that developed organically rather than through a deliberate plan. Rather than advertising rates, GOAT has built credibility by sharing lending information, explaining concepts such as borrowing capacity and lender policy so prospective clients understand the reasoning behind a recommendation.
Scaling that service without diluting it is now the firm's central challenge. Nguyen remains GOAT’s sole broker, so recruitment has shifted towards building a strong support team around him rather than adding more brokers. The brokerage has partnered with Remote Broker Solutions and recruiter David Browne to secure that talent. Systems and processes, Nguyen says, are what will keep service consistent as GOAT continues to grow.
Looking ahead, Nguyen wants GOAT to build further on its reputation in self-employed, investment and complex lending, while investing in automation and AI to support the team rather than replace the advice-led approach that built the business. “My focus is on building a strong team, maintaining a high standard of advice and service, and letting the numbers follow from that,” he says.
